Inspired styling, gorgeous details, and charming couples… It’s always so much fun to see the results of a well-put-together styled wedding shoot! What you might have wondered though, is what it looks like behind the scenes–as the planning, creative collaboration, and intricate set-up can really make, or break, the vibe, theme and overall success of the shoot itself!
Having shot cinematic films for several styled wedding shoots previously, we were so excited to switch gears a bit and capture Katie Eaker of Katie B Photography as she hosted her very own styled shoot! We’d wanted to do a BTS/promo-hybrid film for some time now, so when we heard about Katie’s shoot, we jumped on the opportunity.
While there were certainly various obstacles Katie had to overcome leading up to, and during the styled shoot, you’d never guess this was her first time hosting one, let alone facing so much last-minute adversity! She handled every challenge with such grace and her adaptability to each curve ball was admirable. From sourcing more than ten different vendors to contribute their wonderful talents and creativity, to overcoming logistical nightmares of rescheduling the shoot a couple times previously due to inclement weather–Katie hunkered down and made it all come alive in a vivid way.
Jordan’s Crossing was gracious enough to host the event at their peaceful parcel of North Georgia heaven. The charming, warm barn worked great for Katie’s theme–A Rock n’ Roll Gypsy Wedding! A ton of soft, natural light spilled into the barn, and made our job as filmmakers much easier. Even though we filmed around noon till early afternoon, we were lucky once we went outside that we had some cloud cover, and that the rain showers held off till everyone had a chance to get their photos in!! We can’t wait to go back to Jordan’s Crossing to film more events in the future.
By the time the photographers showed up, the details were all set up, the models and real life couple were all primped and prettified, just ready to make the photo magic happen! You’d think the couple’s main occupation was modeling, but this was their first time! It doesn’t hurt that they’re already married and love each other so much, though. The groom’s sharp suit was a subtle grey, the perfect contrast for the bride’s elegant, modern white wedding gown. The florals provided by The Botanical Studio added a ton of beautiful color and positive emotions, and we were blown away by the quality of Raven’s thoughtful arrangements.
As far as filming the BTS, we had so much fun exploring a different aspect of styled shoots this time around. More accustomed to filming the models and details in a cinematic way, we blended our cinematic storytelling with a fly-on-the wall approach. We focused directly on Katie as she did her thing. From the moment Katie brought the bags of thrift store-sourced wedding details from her vehicle, to how she had to unexpectedly take on the role of a makeup artist, to the moment when she finally could get her shutter clicking–we made sure we depicted her in as fun and interesting a way as possible.
It made our job easier that she’s candid and unafraid to be filmed. Sometimes when people are nervous, it can be a bit tricky to get what we need to get, but Katie’s confidence and poise were palpable throughout! Besides putting a hidden lav microphone on her to get high quality natural dialogue, we also did an informal, talking-head interview portion, as we wanted to intercut the interview footage with the b-roll and more engaging BTS content. Bearing the theme of Rock n’ Roll Gypsy in mind, we chose a edgy but fun song on Soundstripe to help pace the film too 🙂
We’re just incredibly pumped to release this BTS-promo hybrid film to the world. We cannot wait to continue creating similar videos for our photographer friends here in the Atlanta and North Georgia community. We love the art they’re putting out to the world, and we feel they all deserve to position themselves as authorities with the help of video(s) such as this one!! Thanks for having us, Katie. We look forward to future collaborations with you and the amazing talent who contributed as well.
